Feeding less leads to longer life

We've recently reviewed the results of a 15 year study that looked at the effects of restricting food intake in dogs to prevent them becoming overweight. There were some very interesting findings.
The food-restricted dogs:

·         were less fat (predictably)

·         lived 2 years longer

·         didn't develop arthritis (or other chronic diseases) until much later in life

This study reinforces the need for weight control in dogs.
Is your dog overweight? Feeding less could significantly improve their health and longevity. Come in for a free weigh-in and we'll estimate your pet's body condition score and ideal bodyweight. Please refer to our Weight Loss Program brochure for more information.

New Prescription Diet Feline Minced

Hill's have recently introduced a new minced-meat texture for some of their Prescription Diet canned foods. Their research shows that 91% of cats prefer minced foods. The new formula is available in the following varieties:

·         Feline r/d Minced with Liver - for weight loss

·         Feline c/d-oxl Minced with Chicken - for oxalate uroliths (not common)

·         Feline c/d-s Minced with Chicken (also still available in traditional texture)
- for management of FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease)

·         Feline k/d Minced with Chicken - for renal disease.

These foods should be used only on veterinary advice. But if your cat has been diagnosed with one of these problems and is a fussy eater, then the new textures may be worth a try. If you're interested in trying them, please give us a call and we'll order some in for you. All Hill's Prescription diets have a 100% money-back guarantee if your pet doesn't eat it.

Remember, no canned foods will keep your cat's teeth and gums healthy, so your cat needs raw meaty bones to chew - ask us for advice.

The Veterinary Surgeons Board is the official regulatory body of veterinary surgeons practicing in New South Wales. An A-Class Hospital accreditation means that we are equipped to meet minimum standards that are higher than those required for B and C class veterinary clinics and surgeries.

It also helps with clear definition of the procedures to be performed, and allows you to give written consent for these procedures.

Flea Control

A new information sheet which includes a description of the flea's life cycle and how to stop them. Common flea control programs are outlined and we give our recommendations on the most effective products to use.

Heartworm Prevention in Dogs

Another new information which discusses the risks of infection with heartworm, the disease signs that it causes, and which medications can be safely used to prevent it. Recommendations on heartworm testing are also briefly covered.

Bathing your Dog (or cat?)

is the title of another new handout, which includes guidelines on bathing including:
How often? Bathing puppies and cats, shampoo selection and flea control.
There is a description of how to bath your pet, and a page of shampooing tips from Dermcare.

The Products page has been expanded

It now includes descriptions of a lot more products, along with links directly to their manufacturers sites where available.

There's also new pages on Arthritis, Overweight/Obese Pets, Skin Allergies, Flea Allergies, Atopy and geriatrics.

These pages were taken directly from some of our existing newsletters. We'll expand their content when time allows.

We've added an Alphabetical Index Page to our site.

This refers you to the most relevant page on any particular topic. We thought this would be more useful than the usual Search field used on web sites, that displays many pages that merely mention the word. (We'll probably add a search field one day too.)

We've created a new PDF file on Emergency Care PDF

This PDF includes all of the information from our Emergency pages in a format that allows you to print it for ready reference. It is very similar to our Autumn newsletter, with the addition of some maps that show you how to get to the Animal Emergency and Critical Care Service at Strathfield.

We've also made numerous other minor changes to the web site.

We've made some minor updates to the content, added a few more graphics, and added menu bars to the top of some of the longer pages for easier navigation.
The Links page also now includes a field right there on the top of the page where you can suggest a site you'd like us to add to the page.
The LifeLearn Handouts pages now include a facility where you can request these documents (which are not on our website) to be e-mailed to you.
The previous contents of this What's New page were moved to What's Old!
